DAVID'S CARPENTRY
Crown Molding.
My customer wanted stained oak 4 1/4" crown molding installed in three bedrooms, master closet and the hallway.
I stained the crown molding to match the existing oak woodwork.
I use 16 foot long stock so there are as few splices as possible.
The corners fit perfectly.
I use wipe-on polyurethane for a beautiful finish.
When a wall is over 16 feet long it needs two pieces spliced together. Where there is a splice I use glue and a backer board so it is secured solidly.
Also, when the crown is over four inches wide just nailing into the double top plate isn't always enough to hold it solidly. I locate all the ceiling joists so I can nail it at the top and the bottom of the crown. When a wall runs parallel with the ceiling joists there is nothing to nail to at the top so I install backer boards there, too.
