DAVID'S CARPENTRY
Deck Repair.
My customer wanted their deck rebuilt with new cedar.
These are the "before" pictures.
Many of the deck boards are cracked. The redwood colored paint is peeling. Note the built-in bench seats on the east wing. There are no handrails.
Many of the facia boards were falling off. Note the loose board at the bottom left.
The back step is made of four granite slabs forming a box. The handrail is just a 2x4. The posts supporting the handrail are two 2x4's nailed together.
Another shot of the built-in bench seats. They take up a lot of space.
A close-up of the deck boards. Notice how the end joints are lined up at every other board. This forms a pattern that the eye is drawn to making them much more visible. If the end joints are placed randomly the eye doesn't notice them.
These are the "after" pictures.
The deck boards are being replaced. New handrailings are being built.
The built-in bench seats are removed. All the joists, beams and posts underneath the deck are made of treated lumber and are in excellent shape. No work is needed on them.
New handrailings all around. All new cedar deck boards. The end joints are placed randomly so they don't stick out which is much more appealing to the eye. All the post caps are solar powered night lights.
Remember the step that was made out of granite slabs? It was replaced with a nice cedar step. Also replaced was the 2x4 handrail. All the posts are 4x4 cedar. The posts at the bottom of the step are set in cement.
A new built-in bench where the old ones were. There is only one which creates a lot more space. The customers did the staining themselves.
A close-up of the railings and solar powered night light post caps.
A close-up of the front step. Again, the post at the bottom is set in cement. Properly maintained, this deck will last for fifty years or more.
